She Made the World Thirsty — And Tyla Is Coming to San Diego This December

Let me take you back to 2023 for a second. Because you need to feel where we were before Tyla happened to all of us.

It was a regular summer scroll through social media. And then a video started showing up everywhere — this girl, this stunning girl, with a water bottle, moving her body to a slow, hypnotic groove. And nobody could scroll past it. Nobody. It didn’t matter what platform you were on, what time of day it was, or what you were doing before you pressed play. Once you saw it, you watched it again. And then again.

That was “Water.” That was Tyla. And nothing has been the same since.

I’m not exaggerating when I say no one has looked at a water bottle the same way. She turned an everyday object into a whole metaphor and a dance move that had the entire internet in a chokehold for months. The #TylaWaterChallenge alone racked up over 446 million views on TikTok with more than 600,000 videos. People were in living rooms, on patios, in parking lots — all trying to channel whatever she was doing in that video. Most of us did not succeed. But we tried, because watching her do it was that infectious.

Here’s what made it deeper than just a viral moment though. Tyla was the kind of woman that men wanted to love and women wanted to emulate. There was something about her sweet and sexy energy that felt completely effortless — like she wasn’t performing sensuality, she was just being it. She reminded us that sex appeal doesn’t have to be loud or forced. It can be free-flowing and unhurried. It can pour over you slowly, just like water.

And she was 21 years old.

On Monday, December 15, 2026, Tyla brings the A*Pop World Tour to Viejas Arena in San Diego — and San Diego gets to ring in the end of the year with one of the most exciting global pop artists on the planet right now. She is coming to heat up our winter, and baby, December in San Diego is about to feel like summer.

Meet Tyla: The Queen of Popiano

Tyla Laura Seethal was born on January 30, 2002, in Edenvale, South Africa — just outside Johannesburg. Her family fostered her love for singing early on, and she was especially influenced by American R&B, global pop icons like Michael Jackson and Rihanna, and local South African music.

She told People in 2023: “I really looked up to Michael Jackson as a performer specifically.” That lineage of influence — Rihanna’s confidence, MJ’s stage presence, South African rhythms at the foundation — is exactly what you hear when Tyla performs. It’s global, but it’s rooted.

She signed a music deal with Epic Records in 2021 after her 2019 debut song “Getting Late” became popular in South Africa. She coined her music “popiano” — a mix of pop with amapiano, the South African dance music genre, sometimes called “jazzy house music,” that originated in the mid-2010s. The label fits, but it also undersells her. Because Tyla doesn’t just blend genres — she makes them feel like one organism.

“Water” — The Song That Changed Everything

“Water” was released on July 28, 2023, and gained traction on TikTok in August 2023 after a video of Tyla doing the accompanying dance during a live performance went viral. Originally intended for a different song, Tyla insisted that the choreography would work with “Water” and decided to add the water-pouring to help the song go viral. She was right. She was so right.

The song hit the Billboard Top 10 and earned her the record of highest-charting African female solo artist. It was the first song by a South African solo singer to enter the US Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years. Think about that. Fifty-five years. And it took a 21-year-old from Johannesburg with a water bottle and a slow groove to break that barrier.

📺 Tyla — “Water” (Official Music Video) — 384 million YouTube views and counting. If you haven’t seen it, go watch it. Then come back and get your tickets.

📺 Tyla — “Water” (Live on The Tonight Show) — Watch how she performs this live. The control. The confidence. The presence. This is what December 15th is going to feel like in that arena.

🎧 Stream Tyla on Spotify — “Water,” “Truth or Dare,” “Push 2 Start,” “Chanel,” and “She Did It Again” are your starting five. Just let it play through. You won’t regret it.

Two Grammys. Two Albums. One Global Force.

Tyla won the first-ever Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance in 2024 — and became the youngest African artist to win a Grammy at the age of 22. Then she did it again. At the 2026 Grammy Awards, she won Best African Music Performance for the second time, this time for her single “Push 2 Start” — and used that moment on stage to announce her sophomore album.

A*Pop was released on July 24, 2026, through Epic Records. The album is led by “Chanel,” released October 24, 2025, which became her second number-one hit on Rhythmic Airplay after “Water.” The second single, “She Did It Again,” features Zara Larsson and was released April 17, 2026. The record arrives with a clear mission: to redefine what an African pop star sounds like on the global stage. She described the album as “unapologetic,” “confident,” and “global” — and anyone who’s heard it knows she delivered exactly that.

The A*Pop World Tour: A Long Time Coming

The A*Pop World Tour is a 34-date outing that kicks off in Europe in October before making its way to North America. The North American leg winds through San Francisco, Chicago, Brooklyn, Washington D.C., Atlanta, and Tampa — before closing out the continent with three final West Coast dates: Phoenix on December 14th, San Diego on December 15th, and Los Angeles on December 16th.

San Diego is the second-to-last stop before the tour heads to Lagos and Cape Town. That means by the time Tyla hits Viejas Arena, this show will be fully dialed in — every transition locked, every moment built for maximum impact. We get the peak of the tour.

And for those who remember when her 2024 world tour was cancelled due to an injury she had been quietly dealing with — this one is personal for her too. She waited. She healed. And now she’s here, on her first full-scale global headline tour, with a two-time Grammy-winning sophomore album in hand. The energy on that stage on December 15th is going to be something else entirely.
