About the Fireworks Show

The Big Bay Boom fireworks show is a salute to the military families of our service heroes. Established in 2001, this event has grown to be the largest annual fireworks show on the West Coast, captivating hundreds of thousands of spectators each year. The show features about 18 minutes of technically advanced fireworks launched from four barges strategically placed around North San Diego Bay.

The fireworks are choreographed to music broadcast live on 101.5 KGB radio, creating a mesmerizing experience of sight and sound. The Coast Guard, Harbor Police, and special patrol vessels ensure safety on the water, while city police assist with traffic and public safety on land.

The History and Mission

The Big Bay Boom was conceived by Sandy Purdon, who saw the potential for a grand fireworks show on San Diego Bay to bring people to the waterfront and support local businesses. Over the years, the event has expanded from two to four barges, attracting visitors from all over Southern California and beyond.

The event’s mission is to provide a stunning fireworks show for the enjoyment of San Diego residents and visitors, enhance visitation to local communities, and support the Armed Services YMCA. Since its inception, the event has contributed approximately $400,000 to the charity, supporting military families with essential programs.
