Who Is Ari Lennox?

Ari Lennox — born Courtney Shanade Salter on March 26, 1991 — is a singer-songwriter out of Washington, D.C.  She’s the kind of artist that real music heads keep in heavy rotation. Her sound pulls straight from the soul — described as successfully blending classic Motown, modern R&B, and new-age soul into one seamless product.

She got her start in the early 2010s posting covers online, before signing with J. Cole’s Dreamville Records in 2015. She was the only woman — and the only singer-songwriter — on the hip-hop-heavy roster. That alone should tell you how talented she is. She wasn’t just filling a slot — she earned her place.

Her voice has been compared to Erykah Badu. If that doesn’t sell you, keep reading.

Her Music: Neo-Soul With No Apologies

Ari Lennox makes music for people who feel things deeply. Her artistry is rooted in emotional honesty, and she doesn’t shy away from vulnerability. She describes her own voice as “vulnerable but soulful; imperfect but pretty.”

Her inspirations include Mariah Carey, Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Whitney Houston, Aaliyah, Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton, and soul legend Minnie Riperton — basically a who’s who of the greatest voices in Black music history. You can hear all of that influence in her work.

Her catalog includes three studio albums:

  • Shea Butter Baby (2019) — Her critically acclaimed debut that put the world on notice. Platinum-certified title track, fan favorites like “BMO” and “Whipped Cream,” and GRAMMY nominations to back it up.
  • Age/Sex/Location (2022) — A mature, confident sophomore effort that Rolling Stone praised as an “R&B gem.” The lead single “Pressure,” produced by Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox, became her first solo entry on the Billboard Hot 100.
  • Vacancy (2026) — Her newest album and the one she’s touring right now. Crafted over a three-year recording process rooted in intention, self-reflection, and artistic freedom, Vacancy signals a sophisticated new chapter defined by creative autonomy and confidence. Live Nation Newsroom Standout singles include “Twin Flame,” “Under the Moon,” and the title track “Vacancy.”

Why This Tour Is a Big Deal

Ari’s live presence is equally compelling. Her sold-out 2023 headlining tour moved nearly 90,000 tickets worldwide, and she continues to connect deeply with a wide range of audiences. This is not an artist who mails it in on stage — she brings everything every night.

The Vacancy Tour is a massive 31-city run produced by Live Nation, hitting major cities coast to coast. The San Diego stop comes right after her L.A. show at YouTube Theater, so expect the energy to be locked in and the setlist to be dialed.

Special guests Phabo and Lekan are joining her on the road for the full run — two of the most talented indie R&B artists in the game right now. This is a full night of nothing but quality music.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Night at SOMA San Diego

If you’ve never been to SOMA, here’s what you need to know to have the best experience possible.

📍 The Address SOMA San Diego is located at 3350 Sports Arena Blvd, San Diego, CA 92110 — right off Sports Arena Blvd in the Point Loma/Midway area.

🕗 Get There Early SOMA opens 30 minutes to an hour before show time. Showing up early means better positioning on the floor, shorter lines, and a chance to catch the opening acts — and with Phabo and Lekan on this bill, you don’t want to miss them.

🅿️ Parking Is Free — But Limited SOMA includes free parking in the lot on the north side of the venue, with additional free parking available in the strip mall spaces out front. That said, the lot fills up fast, so get there early. You can also use SpotHero to reserve a guaranteed spot nearby in advance if you want to keep it stress-free.

💵 Bring Cash This one is critical. SOMA is cash only at certain concession stands. There are ATMs on-site, but save yourself the fees and the line — pull cash before you arrive.

🚫 No Re-Entry SOMA has a no re-entry policy for all events. Once you’re in, you’re in for the night. Make sure you have everything you need before you step through the door.

📸 Leave the Camera Gear at Home Professional photography equipment, detachable lenses, tripods, monopods, and selfie sticks are not allowed. Your phone is fine — just be present and enjoy the moment.

🍔 Eat Before You Go There are food options nearby, including an In-N-Out Burger and Chipotle a short walk from the venue. Have a real meal before the show so you can stay locked in all night without having to leave.

🧍 Own Your Spot on the Floor The main floor is general admission and all the same level, so positioning matters. Arrive early, find your spot, and plant your feet. If the view gets blocked, don’t be afraid to move — there’s usually room to find a better angle.

🌡️ Dress for the Vibe Expect it to get warm on the floor, especially once the crowd fills in. Layer up so you can adjust, and wear something comfortable enough to dance in all night — because with Ari on stage, you will be moving.
