Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks a pivotal moment in American history. It commemorates the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day, represents the end of one of America’s darkest periods and the beginning of a new era of freedom and civil rights.

In recent years, Juneteenth has gained more recognition as a federal holiday. In 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law, making it the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established in 1983. This recognition underscores the importance of acknowledging and celebrating the history, resilience, and contributions of African Americans.
