Barrio Logan – Libelula Books & Co. – Located on the corner of National Ave. and 26th St. this cozy bookstore is a hidden gem in the heart of Barrio Logan. 

There are trendy bookstores, there are corporate bookstores and then there is Libelula Books. Filled with knick-knacks and memories from a classic Hispanic childhood, this storefront resembles a living room more than a bookstore and the staff treats you like a guest in their home!

Owner Jesi has been in business for just over a year, but is firmly rooted in the culture of Barrio Logan. Having been a teacher in this community, pre-pandemic, and a lifelong lover of books, the work filling the shelves reflects a unique sense of self discovery and empowerment. 

The books that first filled Libelula Books & Co. were a part of Jesi’s personal library and a collection of donations she collected from family and friends on a pilgrimage from her then home in Mexico to Los Angeles and back to the Barrio. Now, she listens to suggestions from those in the community and a desired mission to provide resources for the BIPOC, LGBTQ community of San Diego.

Whether you are looking for seasonal books for stocking stuffers, a retro typewriter or classic vinyl this “bookstore” provides options you didn’t even know you needed. The fascinating thing is that Jesi only sources the books to stock her shelves. Almost everything else in the store has either been donated from locals in the community or created with time dedicated from those in the community. 

These gifts aren’t only received at Libelula Books & Co., but Jesi generously offers a variety of ways for locals to grow in the space. Libelula Books offers 4 community computers, free Wi-Fi, Summer Kids Reading, Free Tutoring for K-12 every Tuesday through Thursday, a Free Little Library and Indigenous Seed Bank.
