San Diego – This is a 100% pure op-ed article, but I feel very confident that I’m not alone in the desire for a revitalization of one of my favorite music genres. As an 80s baby, I would say that I grew up in the golden age of music. As you go through the Millennial TikTokers that make it a point to show the different classic 90s and 2000s songs that are being sampled in today’s music, it makes me really miss what I consider the Golden Age of Love Music and R&B. On my search for an updated playlist I can really vibe to, I’ve stumbled upon some new favorites. This edition features more of the danceable hits… you know the ones you like to listen to when you’re getting ready to go for a long needed night out!
“Gotta Move On” – Diddy feat. Bryson Tiller
Recently Diddy, started a campaign and consequently a record label with this same intention in mind… bringing back real R&B music. He recently dropped a new song with Bryson Tiller called “Gotta Move On.” This song definitely reminds me of the Bad Boy heyday, with its fun rhythms and catchy hook. One of my favorite things about this song is the #GottaMoveOnChallenge, where Diddy invited other people to lay add a rap verse to the song. Artists like Fabolous, Papoose and Dreezy added their verse, and the official remix has Ashanti and Yung Mami on the track. This is a great “get ready for the club and forget your man” anthem.
“Better Thangs” – Ciara feat. Summer Walker
If you wake up in the morning and tell yourself things are going to be better than the day before, they will be. If you wake up in the morning and dance to a beat telling you that there are better thangs in store, there will be. That’s why I love this song with Ciara featuring Summer Walker, called Better Thangs. The remix has Glorilla, who recently hit the scene in a big way with her breakout single, Tomorrow 2 featuring Cardi B. This song is a bop (as the kids say), and is perfect getting ready music for your big night out.
“2 Sugar” Wizkid feat. Ayra Starr
Though afro beats is a genre of its own, the smooth beats that are laid underneath the songs of artists such as Wizkid, Burna Boy and Tems, make these great options for your favorite R&B soundtrack. Wizkid’s new song, 2 Sugar featuring Ayra Starr, is that type of song that will put a sway in your hips and smile on your face. As the temperatures start to drop, the melody will make you feel like you’re being whisked away to some exotic location.
In Conclusion
I’m excited to see that producers and music lovers are going back to a gentler and lighter side of R&B. Over the past few years, I’ve seen the R&B get harder and harder. We need more love stories and feel good favorites to add to our playlists.
What are some of your favorite R&B hits right now?
